The EHAS Program: Telemedicine for Isolated Areas in Developing Countries

The EHAS Program gives health service providers access to a series of low cost communication tools and telemedicine services, both adapted to rural areas. EHAS stands for "Enlance Hispano Americano de Salud", and could be translated as Spanish-American Health Link or Liason. The EHAS system can equip rural health centres and health outposts with voice communication and e-mail, even in areas where landlines and power lines are unavailable. EHAS further provides resources like distance training courses for medical staff, forwarding of enquiries to off-site specialists, a helping hand in accessing published health papers or advice on developing computer based epidemic surveillance systems.

EHAS was born as an initiative of the Bioengineering and Telemedicine Group (GBT) of Madrid's Polytechnic University (UPM), together with Madrid's Engineers Without Borders Association (ISF-Madrid). Today, it is backed by a number of Spanish American and European institutions working in partnership.

One of the main goals of the EHAS Program is to contribute scientific knowledge in the field of communications applied to rural healthcare in developing countries. More specifically, it attempts to assess the impact that introducing communication systems for voice and data - as well as services to make information access possible in spite of the difficulties involved with being in isolated rural areas – might have on the working conditions of rural healthcare workers.
