HEALTH FOR ALL IN LA
Primary and Community or Family Care are called to play an increasingly important role in the modern health care systems both to contain soaring health care expenditure and to improve equity of access to care.
This trend is common to most, not to say all, western countries and Latin America makes no exception. This is demonstrated by the various programs which have been launched throughout the continent; examples of such programs are "Saúde da Familia" introduced by the Brazilian Ministry of Health in 1994, the "Family Medicine Program" promoted by the Government of Chile and the "Reforma del Seguro Bàsico de Salud" launched by the Government of Bolivia in 1993.
A previous research carried out in Brazil and Chile by the Applicant however, points to a clear and urgent need for securing the success of the reforms underway, to improve medical knowledge and managerial skills among Family Health Teams, which operate both in the urban and rural areas, through a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) initiative. HEALTH for ALL in LA aims to implement, in three demonstration sites - District of Potosì (Bolivia), Vitória da Conquista State of Bahia (Brazil) and the town of Pudahuel in the Region of Santiago (Chile) - an innovative eLearning environment able to support in an effective and affordable way the CPD of Family Care Team staffs who operate in these geographical areas.
